Time flies, doesn’t it? In 2024, Bangladesh stunned the cricket world by winning the Test series in Pakistan. Before this tour, Bangladesh had never beaten Pakistan in Test cricket, but defied the odds to rewrite history with a landmark. Almost two years later, the two teams will meet again, this time in Bangladesh for a two-match Test series.
The series is of great importance to both sides. Pakistan are currently fifth in the World Test Championship standings and will be eager to strengthen their move up the table. Bangladesh, meanwhile, are ranked eighth and will be looking to make the most of home conditions to revive their campaign.
The home side will take confidence from their recent performances on home soil, especially on the spin-friendly surfaces that often trouble visiting teams. Pakistan, on the other hand, arrive with a refreshed squad and improved support staff as they look to build more consistency in red-ball cricket.
BANGLADESH BANK ON YOUTH
Najmul Hossain Shanto will continue to lead Bangladesh in the Test series, with Mehidy Hasan Miraz serving as vice-captain. Bangladesh added new faces to the squad, handing first Test call-ups to Tanzid Hasan Tamim and Amit Hasan after impressive home performances. Tanzid has already established himself in white-ball cricket and is now getting an opportunity to prove himself in the longest format.
The return of fast bowlers Taskin Ahmed and Shoriful Islam adds considerable strength to Bangladesh’s pace attack, while spinner Nayeem Hasan also returns to the Test setup. Bangladesh will once again rely heavily on veteran batsmen like Mushfiqur Rahim, Litton Das and Mehidy Hasan Miraz to guide the younger players in pressure situations.
PAKISTAN’S RING IN TRANSFORMATION
Shan Masood will captain Pakistan in what promises to be a crucial away assignment. Pakistan’s selectors took a bold approach and named four uncapped players in the squad: Abdullah Fazal, Amad Butt, Azan Awais and Muhammad Ghazi Ghori. The quartet earned promotion after strong domestic performances and are expected to inject new energy into the side.
Pakistan also revamped their coaching set-up with the former captain Sarfaraz Ahmed appointed head coach for the tour. Former Test cricketers Asad Shafiq and Umar Gul have joined the support staff as batting and bowling coaches.
Despite the inclusion of new faces, Pakistan still have plenty of experience with the likes of Shaheen Shah Afridi expected to spearhead the bowling attack. However, the conditions in Bangladesh are likely to test Pakistan’s batting unit against quality spin and reverse swing. With both teams eager to secure valuable WTC points, it could be an intense and close Test series.
