The Congress is considering helping Vijay form a “secular” government in Tamil Nadu after reaching out for support
Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam president C. Joseph Vijay on Tuesday (May 5, 2026) approached the Congress, part of the DMK-led Secular Progressive Alliance, seeking support to form a government in Tamil Nadu as the debutant emerged as the single largest party in the Assembly, winning 108 seats and falling short of a 234 simple majority in the House.
The National Party, which won five seats, has indicated it may extend support. In Delhi, All India Congress Committee General Secretary KC Venugopal confirmed that TVK had formally requested Congress’ support.
According to TVK sources, Vijay and senior party leaders have requested a meeting with Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar on Wednesday (May 6, 2026).
As the leader of the single largest party, Vijay is likely to either stake a claim or seek more time to form the government. It remains to be seen whether Vijay would seek the support of any other DMK or AIADMK allies to prove his majority.
