The Ranipet SIPCOT police on Wednesday arrested two persons for illegal sand mining from the dry bed of the Ponnai river, a tributary of the Palar, at Kondakuppam village near Ranipet town.
Police said the arrested persons have been identified as K. Rajasekar, 21, and N. Sakthivel, 24. They are residents of Kondakuppam village near the city. In the Ranipet SIPCOT area, a special police team was patrolling along the river when the police found several persons with a tractor engaged in sand mining.
When the gang saw the police, several members fled the scene. However, the police managed to detain two people along with the tractor. The team checked the vehicle and found illegal river sand. Initial investigation revealed that the illegally quarried sand was being transported to private contractors in the district.
A case has been registered. Special teams have been formed to nab the suspects who fled the scene. The arrested persons have been lodged in Vellore Central Jail. The police seized a tractor and an earthmoving machine. A probe is underway.
