
A Visakhapatnam court on Wednesday convicted a remand prisoner for escaping from police custody at King George Hospital in 2025.
Visakhapatnam Chief Judicial Magistrate M. Pradeep Kumar sentenced Namala Nagaraja, 35, a native of NTR district, to one year rigorous imprisonment and fined her ₹6,000. In case of non-payment, he would undergo one month of simple imprisonment, the court ordered.
According to Senior Deputy Public Prosecutor Mylapilli Adinarayan, Nagaraju was a remand prisoner in an attempted murder case and was undergoing treatment at the prison ward at KGH.
On 8 May 2025, while the escort staff were allowing the inmates to have breakfast, Nagaraju allegedly escaped from the ward and escaped from police custody.
A case was registered by the I Town traffic police following a complaint filed by Kona Armed Reserve Commandant Ananda Rao. Sub-Inspector K. Srinivasa Rao investigated the matter and filed a chargesheet. The prosecution established the charge under Section 262 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, beyond reasonable doubt, the prosecutor said.
