After several failed attempts to curb public urination near a suburban bus stand in Mysuru, steel mirrors were installed along a compound wall on a busy road as a deterrent.
This innovative move aims to discourage people from urinating in public by creating a sense of self-awareness.
The initiative has attracted widespread attention on social media, with many users praising the “creativity” behind the solution. Videos demonstrating the installation of the mirror have gone viral, with commentators praising the effort to keep the city clean, while some suggest increasing the number of public toilets as a more sustainable solution.
Commuters and pedestrians visiting the stretch have long complained about people urinating in the open, affecting hygiene in the area. The location witnesses heavy traffic due to its proximity to the bus stand and importance as a key transport corridor.
The move also sparked a debate about the accountability of civic authorities. Some residents pointed to the lack of accessible public toilets in the area, with the lack of basic sanitation infrastructure contributing to the problem. The nearest public toilet is located at the bus stop.
There have also been complaints about the insufficient number and poor maintenance of public toilets across the city. Even busy commercial areas like D. Devaraja Urs Road reportedly lack clean and functional facilities.
