BRIEF SCORE, SRH vs PBKS: Sunrisers Hyderabad (235 for 4 in 20 overs) beat Punjab Kings (202 for 7 in 20 overs) by 33 runs in Hyderabad on Wednesday.
If you think dropped catches are the only way fielding can hurt a team, Punjab Kings offered a reminder that even well-kept chances can sting just as much. On a warm evening at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium, PBKS found themselves on the wrong side of this paradox. While putting away key opportunities, Sunrisers Hyderabad took theirs with confidence and that contrast told the story as they sealed a 33-run win and climbed to the top of the table.
SRH vs PBK : HIGHLIGHTS | SCORECARD
In T20 cricket, catches are supposed to win you games. But here they shaped the competition in more ways than one. Chasing a daunting target of over 200, the Shreyas Iyer-led Punjab Kings have looked like a side you would normally believe would make it this season in the Indian Premier League. That has been their identity this season, fearless in pursuit, clinical under pressure.
However, standing in their way was Pat Cummins, a captain who had developed a reputation for quieting surging opponents. And on this night, as he has done so often, Cummins and his men arrived with a plan and the discipline to execute it when it mattered most.
Cooper Connolly did his best to make up for earlier lapses in the field for PBKS. However, his maiden IPL century could only repair the damage to their net rates. The Australian finished unbeaten on 107 as wickets continued to fall at the other end.
TRAVISHEK VS PRABHARYA
A Travishek vs Prabharya match was set up on a batting surface in Uppal. However, only one side rose. While SRH’s initial stand didn’t last long, it was enough to inflict early damage on the PBKS bowlers who have had a tough time in the powerplay this season.
SRH ‘Brothers of Destruction’ raced for 54 runs in just 21 balls before Abhishek Sharma departed. The PBKS bowlers had a clear plan: keep him short and make the batting difficult. But before any mistakes crept in, the duo had already punished them all over the land. Abhishek smashed 35 off 13 before mistimed one off Lockie Ferguson.
Carrying the momentum forward, Travis Head took charge immediately after Abhishek’s release. He batted 38 off 19 before fumbling a delivery from Yuzvend Chahal.
In contrast, PBKS openers Prabhsimran Singh and Priyansh Arya were back in the pavilion within the first seven balls of the chase. They managed just four runs between them, their lowest opening total in an IPL innings since 2024.
CUMMINS MASTERCLASS
While the wasted chances caught the eye, it was Cummins’ tactical brilliance that stood out. His side did their homework to dismantle the PBKS batting unit which was chasing big numbers, like their effort against Delhi Capitalswith ease this season.
SRH read the conditions well and stuck to their plans. The bowlers kept bouncing back and broke the backbone of the PBKS chase. Captain Cummins shone, whether it was setting a trap for Arya, who attacked at first, or feeding the ball to Reddy, who struck with his very first delivery.
The Australian captain was rightly adjudged man of the match for his masterful defense of the chase against a side that makes flat-field chases look easy.
DROPPED CATCHES COST YOU 235
If PBKS thought bowling was their only concern, they were in for a long night. Dropped catches and missed knocks allowed SRH to unwind. Punjab have dropped 16-17 catches this season.
After Travish’s departure, Ishan Kishan teamed up with Heinrich Klaasen to add to the misery of PBKS. The pair put on 88 runs off 48 balls to put the game out of reach. Both brought up their fifties with ease as PBKS head coach Ricky Ponting looked on helplessly.
“The ball has softened and started to settle a bit in the middle overs. But I still want to pocket it and take it everywhere. It’s a medium pace wicket. Fantastic on the bat,” Klaasen said after the innings.
Klaasen’s 69 off 43 proved decisive, leaving Ponting and Iyer with little room to reply. Nitish Kumar Reddy added the finishing touch to finish unbeaten on 29 off 13 deliveries. With that, SRH maintained their dominance over Punjab in Uppal.
With this win, Sunrisers Hyderabad moved to 14 points with three matches remaining, while Punjab Kings, who have started the season impressively, have 13 points with four matches remaining.
