Ahead of the 150th anniversary of the Ongole Municipal Corporation (OMC), Prakasam District Collector and Special Officer of the Corporation P. Raja Babu has directed officials to conduct a series of events to create awareness about cleanliness in the city. He directed the OMC staff to pay special attention to development and beautification works across the city.
The urban local body was established as Ongole Municipality on 30 September 1876, during British rule. It was upgraded as a Municipal Corporation on 25 January 2012 to meet the needs of the growing population. It currently has an area of almost 132.45 km2 with 50 urban districts. So far, it has received several state awards for excellence in cleanliness and waste management.
Meanwhile, the Collector has asked the officials to organize weekly cultural programs on different themes at Gandhi Park to mark the 150th anniversary celebrations. He said that a special open auditorium should be built for this and asked them to install big balloons in different parts of the city to create noise.
Mr. Raja Babu said that more awareness should be created among people to increase their participation in the programs conducted by OMC. He said that steps should be taken to bring about a more positive change in people’s behavior regarding hygiene. Along with the construction of new toilets in the city, the necessary repairs should be started immediately, he said.
