At least 50 people donated blood at a blood donation camp organized by the Defense Coordination Committee and the Center of Indian Trade Unions (CITU), which celebrated May Day at the Mother Blood Center near Jagadamba in Visakhapatnam on Wednesday.
Defense Coordination Committee convener Reddy Venkata Rao and CITU district general secretary RKSV Kumar told the participants that the organization organizes blood donation camps, sports competitions and cultural programs every year as part of May 1 celebrations.
They called on workers to prepare for future struggles for the protection of labor rights on the occasion of the 140th celebration of May.
Speakers argued that the Center had weakened labor protections by replacing the existing labor law with four labor codes. They called on workers to uphold the spirit of the May Day martyrs and continue to fight for an eight-hour working day, protection of public sector enterprises, job security and the introduction of a minimum wage.
Organizers said CITU was not only working to protect labor rights, but also to unionize workers and implement social services. Blood donors were given certificates and souvenirs.
Mother Blood Center Chairman Kiran Kumar, Venkatesh and several union leaders participated in the programme.
