CPI state secretary Binoy Viswam on Wednesday (6 May 2026) said the BJP, which won three seats in the Kerala Assembly polls, must be taken seriously by all secular parties as it poses a “danger” to politics in the state.
Speaking to reporters in the state capital, Mr. Viswam said that the BJP not only won three seats but finished second in six constituencies, which also raised concerns.
He said it shows that when extreme right-wing politics hardened, it had a big impact not only in Kerala but across the country. To deal with it, it needs to be studied in detail by all the leftist and secular forces in the country.
Mr Viswam said the party also needed to study what led to the defeat of the LDF.
He said there was a substantial leakage of votes from the Left Front to the UDF which was not accounted for by any of the LDF parties and the reasons for it needed to be investigated.
For this, district and state level meetings will be held and necessary changes will be made if required, the CPI state secretary said.
“We will seriously investigate what were the shortcomings and where we failed, and then necessary changes and corrections will be made,” he said, adding that the results of all 140 seats would be scrutinized.
He further said that CPI and LDF “will not leave state politics because of defeat as they can move forward only by working for the people”.
The UDF won 102 seats, the LDF 35 and the BJP won 3 seats in the assembly elections held on April 9 in Kerala.
