Tamil Nadu Government Assembly LIVE: Actor Vijay’s Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) met Governor Rajendra Arlekar at Lok Bhavan in Chennai on Wednesday. Vijay has placed his bets on forming the next government in Tamil Nadu.
TVK won 108 mandates. The Congress, which has been a longtime ally of the DMK, has announced support for actor-politician Vijay’s TVK in Tamil Nadu, severing 55-year-old ties with the Dravidian DMK major. Congress has 5 MLAs. The remaining numbers that cross the 118 majority threshold will come from smaller parties.
How the numbers are added: TVK won 108 seats in the 234-member Tamil Nadu Assembly, according to the Election Commission’s May 4 results. However, Vijay’s party fell short of a majority of 118. It needed 10 MLAs to form the state government. That’s where Congress intervened.
After the 2026 Tamil Nadu assembly elections, the Congress has five MLAs, taking the TVK-Congress coalition to 113. It remains to be seen whether the TVK can consolidate support from other parties to reach the majority mark of 118 seats in the 234-member assembly.
In the 2026 polls, Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) emerged as the second largest party with 59 seats, All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) won 47 seats, BJP won one seat, Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) and Communist Party of India (CPI) two seats each.
