Story so far: Incumbent Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma won a second term as the BJP-led North East Democratic Alliance (NEDA) won 102 of the 126 assembly seats. The Congress-led six-party alliance won only 21 seats (Congress – 19, Raijor Dal – 2), while the All India United Democratic Front (AIDUF) won two seats and the Trinamool and Independent candidates one each.
Riding on Mr Sarma’s popularity, the BJP made “removal of illegal immigrants” and a continued push for infrastructure in the North-East on its election manifesto as a special revision of electoral rolls wiped out 2.43 million voters. Dissociating itself from AIUDF Badruddin Ajmal and vowing to “get justice” for the untimely death of state icon Zubeen Garg, the Congress formed a regional alliance with Raijor Dal Akhila Gogoi, Assam Jatiya Parishad (AJP), Left parties and All Party Hill Leaders Conference (APHLC).
