BRIEF SCORE, DC vs CSK: Chennai Super Kings (159 for 2 in 17.3 overs) beat Delhi Capitals (155 for 7 in 20 overs) by 8 wickets in New Delhi on Tuesday.
If you wander the streets of Chennai this week, the air isn’t just saturated with the aroma of frothy filter coffee; it is difficult with the hum of a frenzied arithmetic session. The city is currently obsessed with two specific goals: 118 and 16.
After a historic Monday when Vijay’s TVK emerged as the single largest party with 108 seats, the math is simple: they need exactly 10 more to reach the magic majority of 118. Fast forward to Tuesday night in Delhi and the Yellow Army was doing its own heavy lifting on the field. Chennai Super Kings’ clinical win over Delhi Capitals puts them on 10 points from 10 matches, which means they probably need at least 6 more from their remaining matches to secure a place in the playoffs. The whistles are blowing loudly in Chennai, but the crescendo will only really arrive when the numbers are finally tallied.
However, unlike the Whistle-induced political heat wave that signaled a new era for the state, Tuesday in Delhi offered a cool, fresh aftermath that hinted at revival. Chennai Super Kings put in a calm, collective performance on the field that they would be very keen to root for and take wherever they go.
IPL, DC vs CSK: UPDATE | SCORECARD
Delhi Capitals managed a paltry 155 on a surface that gripped and spun from the opening delivery, failing miserably to adjust to the slow pace. It has been a bipolar season for the hosts at the Arun Jaitley Stadium; they hit a high of 264 and sank to a low of 75. They were caught in a frustrating limbo on Tuesday. It looked like Delhi didn’t know whether to hit the gas or hit the brakes and ended up limping along for a total of at least 20 runs under par.
SANJU SAMSON HAUNTS DELHI AGAIN
In response, Chennai Super Kings cruised home on the back of a super composed and perfectly timed 87 not out from 52 balls by Sanju Samson. It was the second time this season that the Kerala wicketkeeper-batsman haunted the Capitals, after his majestic century in the reverse fixture in Chennai. Supporting performances from youngsters Urvil Patel and Kartik Sharma saw the Yellow Army clear the target in their chase of 156 without ever needing to shift into fifth gear in just 17.3 overs.
Samson, fresh from starring in the T20 World Cup, has had a mercurial season. While he hammered two centuries in the first half of the campaign, his form has largely been boom or bust. Still, he batted with the seasoned maturity of a veteran batsman on Tuesday and anchored a chase that could have turned treacherous had he perished early. He took the onus to dismantle the Capitals spinners, knowing full well that allowing the likes of Axar Patel and Kuldeep Yadav to find their rhythm would spell disaster.
At the toss, Axar predicted that the pitch would slow down in the second innings, but a brief shower that did not interrupt play seemed to play the deciding factor. The moisture on the court surface ensured that the Capitals spinners could not handle the ball effectively, thus negating the home advantage. This was most evident in Kuldeep Yadav’s spell; Usually stingy and surgical on such tracks, Kuldeep struggled for both length and line. Samson feasted on the left arm in the third over, plundering two sixes and a boundary to ensure CSK find their stride after a trying opening overs.
He was equally ruthless against Mitchell Starc and T Natarajan in the latter stages, rushing CSK towards the target to keep their Net Run Rate in a healthy shade of green. Samson finished with six trouble-free maximums and seven boundaries, never allowing the Capitals bowlers to dictate the tempo of the game.
KARTIK SHARMA PERFORMS
Kartik Sharma, who scored his maiden IPL fifty in Chennai last week, has taken that growing confidence to the capital. He played a supporting role perfectly in his 114-run partnership with Samson, providing impetus when needed and rotating the strike to keep the batting partner in form. A beautiful inside-out that flew over the cover boundary off Kuldeep spoke volumes for the young man’s growing stature as he begins to justify the hefty weight of his Rs 14.2 crore price tag.
Lungi Ngidi, back for the first time since a head injury, was the pick of a ragged Delhi attack. He struck early to remove the dangerous Ruturaj Gaikwad but lacked any meaningful support from the other end. While Axar remained economical and scored on Urvil Patel on the power play, his rotation twin endured a rare break just at a time when the Capitals had little to defend.
Ultimately, Delhi Capitals lacked a Samson-style anchor to steer their ship. Neither KL Rahul, Nitish Rana nor the recalled Karun Nair could provide the required steel. Even skipper Axar could not fire against a disciplined Chennai attack. Axar will no doubt face tough questions about his decision to bat first, but in truth his batsmen have simply failed to provide the scoreboard pressure required to justify the challenge.
The defeat was Delhi Capitals’ fourth in five home games. They have struggled to find any rhythm on a surface that refuses to settle, a challenge that has become a common theme across the league this season.
