The Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPI(M)) is expected to seriously consider the reasons behind the Left Democratic Front (LDF) debacle in the assembly elections in Kozhikode district soon. Meanwhile, the Congress said it will probe the reasons behind the defeat of United Democratic Front (UDF)-backed independent PV Anwar in Beypore.
When the assembly election results were declared on Monday (May 4, 2026), the UDF won 12 out of 13 segments in Kozhikode. The Left Front’s victory was limited to Beypore, where LDF candidate and former PA Public Works Minister Muhammad Riyas managed to win. The setback was particularly embarrassing for the Left as the losers included eight sitting MLAs, including LDF convener TP Ramakrishnan, former forest and wildlife minister AK Saseendran. In the 2021 elections, the LDF won 11 out of 13 seats.
A senior CPI(M) official from the district told The Hindu on Tuesday that the party’s state secretariat would soon evaluate the election results and discuss them in detail. “The comments of the State Secretariat will then be sent to the various district committees for consideration. The documents from the district committees will be sent back to the State Committee, which will issue a comprehensive report on the reasons for the front’s poor performance,” he said. The report would also include remedial measures to be taken to revive the party’s electoral fortunes, the CPI(M) leader added.
