Despite a stupendous 63 off 21 balls from Nicholas Pooran and a strong partnership, Lucknow Super Giants suffered their sixth straight defeat. Their inability to close out games, even after posting a massive 228, has virtually ruled them out of the playoffs of IPL 2026. With five must-win games left, a miraculous recovery is needed. LSG needs a perfect run and more results to embark on a miraculous recovery in this IPL 2026 season. Nicholas Pooran’s stunning 63 off 21 balls and 94 with Mitchell Marsh pushed Lucknow Super Giants to a daunting 228, their first 200-plus total in IPL 2026. But it was still not enough. LSG slumped to their sixth straight defeat as Mumbai Indians chased them down with ease, exposing deeper flaws. What should have been a boost instead turned into another crushing loss, leaving LSG with just four points from nine matches and virtually out of the IPL 2026 playoff race.

IPL 2026 Play Off Qualifiers
- 14 points (7 wins): Minimum realistic limit
- 16 points (8 wins): Safe zone
Only exception: 2019 – Sunrisers Hyderabad qualified with 12 points, the only time a team has qualified with more losses than wins.In most seasons, 7 wins keeps you alive, 8 wins puts you in control.
What Lucknow Super Giants need from here
- Remaining matches: 5
- Current points: 4
- To reach 14 points: you need 5 wins from 5 matches
- Reach 16 points: no longer possible
Simply put: 5 wins from 5 games. One more loss and they’re almost out.
LSG freefall
LSGs are in free fall. Their last five results were: L, L, L, L, L. A long losing streak with no signs of recovery. What is more worrying is the nature of the defeats. Even when their batsmen fire, like 228 against MI, the team does not close the game. Earlier losses were marked by batting collapses, but now even strong totals are not enough.
Big problem: Inability to close games
LSG’s biggest problem isn’t just their poor form, it’s their inability to finish games they should be winning. They sent 228 against MI but lost with overs to spare. LSG repeatedly failed to defend competitive totals or chase under pressure.Their bowling lacked control at key stages. Despite scoring in bunches (4 wickets in 20 balls vs MI), they couldn’t sustain the pressure. Deaths in particular were expensive and predictable. On the batting side, there was an excessive dependence on individual halls. Pooran’s 63 came after a long lean run; Marsh was inconsistent; and the middle order, including Rishabh Pant, did not provide stability. And tactically, the use of Aiden Markram in the middle order or Himmat Singh, first as an Impact substitute and later as a first-choice player in the XI, raised concerns throughout the season.
Upcoming IPL 2026 fixtures for Lucknow Super Giants
- May 7 vs Royal Challengers Bengaluru (Lucknow) – Must Win Vs.
- May 10 vs Chennai Super Kings (Chennai) – A tough test
- 15 May vs Chennai Super Kings (Lucknow) – A head-to-head, season-defining clash
- 19 May vs Rajasthan Royals (Jaipur) – against a top four team, high pressure
- May 23 vs Punjab Kings (Lucknow) – Likely Knockout Scenario vs Table Leaders
Lucknow Super Giants are not mathematically out of the picture but realistically they are unlikely to make the top four now. Five wins in five matches is almost impossible given their current form. Even their best performances did not translate into wins, and that sums up their season. LSG need a perfect run and more results to go on their way to a miraculous recovery in this IPL 2026 season.
