V. Kunhikrishnan, who broke decades of Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPI(M)) dominance in Payyannur, Kannur, described the election verdict as a clear endorsement of the issues he raised in the party and a strong message for corrective action by the leadership.
Speaking to The Hindu, Mr. Kunhikrishnan said the mandate reflected acceptance of his criticisms and concerns, while acknowledging the broader anti-establishment factor across Kerala that may have influenced the outcome, including in Payyannur. His victory in the constituency was significant as it came after overcoming a huge margin of nearly 50,000 votes secured by the CPI(M) in the previous elections, a turnaround he admitted exceeded initial expectations.
