As the counting of votes for the Assembly elections ended on Monday (May 4, 2026) evening, the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) faced one of its biggest defeats in 10 constituencies in Coimbatore district, which stood as an impregnable stronghold in the Dravidian major’s stronghold in the Congo region.
The debacle unsettled the party as it could retain only one seat won by veteran SP Velumani in Thondamuthur constituency. Six of its sitting MLAs who contested these elections namely Amman K. Arjunan, PRG Arunkumar, KR Jayaram, Pollachi V. Jayaraman, S. Damodaran and VP Kandasamy were defeated.
