Did Chennai Super Kings captain Ruturaj Gaikwad instigate the row between Jamie Overton and Tilak Varma during the MI vs CSK clash at the Wankhede? The England all-rounder revealed the role Ruturaj played in his war of words with Tilak during CSK’s event with the kids.
The incident between Tilak Varma and Jamie Overton unfolded after the last ball of the 10th over of Mumbai’s innings during a match on April 23 when tempers flared briefly.
Tilak nudged the ball to mid-wicket and looked for a while but was sent back by Suryakumar Yadav. On his way back, he had to duck over Overton at the non-striker’s end, sparking a heated exchange between the two. Suryakumar and the umpires quickly intervened to calm the situation.
However, the two players were later seen embracing each other during post-match handshakes, signaling that all is well despite the earlier confrontation.
While attending a CSK event, Overton was asked by a young fan what actually happened between him and Tilak. The CSK all-rounder quickly put their captain in the limelight.
“No, no, no. Maybe you should ask Rutu because he caused it. At the previous ball…” Overton said.
Ruturaj then revealed that Tilak had hit him for a four off the previous ball and told the all-rounder that he should go home and not play in the IPL. The CSK captain said that made Overton angry and he then had a chance to say a few words to Tilak.
“Tilak hit him for four, so I said to him, ‘You’re playing terribly badly. You shouldn’t be here, you should go home.’ This made him angry and he said some kind words to Tilak and then they started fighting. Being from England, he says a lot of good words,” Ruturaj said.
