The Left Democratic Front (LDF) candidates never had an upper hand in Kozhikode district at any stage of the vote counting for the assembly elections on Monday (May 4). When the final results were announced in the evening, the LDF presence was limited to Beypore only, from where PA Public Works Minister Muhammad Riyas managed to win.
It was nothing short of a major shake-up and role reversal as the ruling front won 11 out of 13 constituencies in the district in 2021. However, the UDF staged a big comeback this time, winning 12 of them. The Congress, which did not win any seat from the district after 2001, also managed to return home with a total of five seats. The district could also send the first Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) legislator, Fathima Tahiliyya, to the assembly. The IUML won six seats, against the one seat (Koduvally) they secured last time.
