Rohit Sharma (84) made a heartwarming comeback from an injury-enforced layoff and Ryan Rickelton (83) gave another account of his batting skills as Mumbai Indians crushed Lucknow Super Giants by six wickets in an Indian Premier League (IPL) match at the Wankhede Stadium on Monday.
Openers Rohit and Rickelton put on their third century partnership in the IPL – this time by 143 runs – laying the foundation for a much-needed win. Mumbai Indians overhauled LSG 228/5 with 229/4 in 18.4 overs. The win took Mumbai Indians’ points tally to six from 10 matches.

After Nicholas Pooran, batting at No. 3 for the first time in this IPL, made the most of ordinary bowling from the Mumbai Indians with a 21-ball 63, Rohit and Rickelton had a blast during their 65-ball, 143-run stand.
No rust for Rohit Sharma on his return
Former Mumbai Indians captain Rohit has missed five matches due to a hamstring injury sustained while batting against Royal Challengers Bengaluru here on April 12. However, the 39-year-old showed no discomfort as he hit seven sixes and six fours in a 44-ball knock.
Rickelton continued his rich form with a commanding stroke play around the park. But Rickelton fell to Mohsin Khan in the 11th over and played a straight one to cover after two towering sixes earlier.
Rohit looked set for his third IPL ton but ran into the sub of Manimaran Siddharth (2/47) to be caught at short fine leg in the 14th over. Tilak Varma (11) failed to make a hole, while Mumbai Indians stand-in skipper Suryakumar Yadav (12) was again caught near the ropes, unnerving the hosts.

But Naman Dhir (23 not out) and Will Jacks (10 not out) completed the task. In the power play, Mumbai Indians were not at zero but 50 odd runs came in the first five overs. The hosts found a launching pad in the sixth when Avesh Khan was smashed for 21 runs by Rohit. Seamer LSG kept going past his lengths and Rohit followed up with a couple of fours with as many sixes.
Starting with a six off Mohsin over deep square leg, Rickelton lit up the chase with a convincing shot against pace and spin.
LSG are riding on Nicolas Pooran’s strike to reach 228/5
Earlier, Lucknow Super Giants rode a whirlwind 20-ball 63 from Pooran to survive a mid-innings slowdown to post a par of 228/5. Pooran cashed in on the wrong line and lengths from the MI bowlers to batter the side with eight sixes and a four in his knock of a minute and a mile, giving LSG the impetus along with Mitchell Marsh’s (25 balls; 4x4s, 3x6s) 44 at the top.
While Jasprit Bumrah (0/45) remained wicketless and stumped three times, Corbin Bosch (2/20) applied the brakes on LSG in the middle overs when the total looked set to cross 240 at one stage. Up to 21 runs, the fourth over from Bumrah started and more misery awaited the Mumbai Indians in the powerplay.

Will Jacks fed Pooran deliveries in his zone and the former West Indies captain had to race to 22 off eight from three for three with three massive sixes. Pooran then swung into Allah hazanfar, hitting two sixes and four sixes to fire LSG to 90/1 in the powerplay.
Pooran went without a half-century in 17 innings but was certainly helped by the poor execution of Mumbai Indians. He completed his 16-ball fifty with a six off Chahar in the eighth over and hit one more. Pooran and Marsh put on 94 for the second wicket from just 35 balls and at 123/1 after eight overs, LSG were firmly in control of the game.
But Bosch derailed the LSG men with a double goal in which he dismissed both Pooran and Marsh. From 123/1, LSG slumped to 160/4 after 12 overs and could have been 160/5 had Bumrah not gone over when he had Himmat Singh (40 not out) caught behind. Himmat did well to make an unbeaten 68 with Aiden Markram (31 not out).
