Tamil Nadu’s long-running bipolar political scene, dominated by the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) and the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) for more than half a century, faced a dramatic disruption on Monday (May 4, 2026) when voting in council elections were counted. Actor-turned-politician Vijay (C. Joseph Vijay), who leads his two-year-old party, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK)surging ahead with early leads in more than 100 of the state’s 234 assembly constituencies.
While the AIADMK held the second position with a steady performance, the ruling DMK suffered a significant decline and fell to the third position. Several of its senior leaders, including Chief Minister MK Stalin (Kolathur), lagged behind in their respective constituencies.
