When people think of frogs, they imagine them as slimy, brown or green and living in ponds, says Dr Vishnupriya Sankararaman. But in reality, especially in the Western Ghats, they are incredibly diverse, coming in so many shapes, colors and occupying many habitats.
“They are in treetops, on rocks, in streams, inside bamboo… in every environment you can imagine,” says the conservation ecologist, who believes that although small and often ignored, the frogs represent the Western Ghats in a way that no other taxon does. “They live all over the Western Ghats and exploit (ecological) niches that we don’t think about.”
