The Supreme Court on Monday (May 4, 2026) described the “danger” of people posing as transgender to enjoy welfare benefits and reservation in government jobs, while hearing multiple petitions challenging a law that removes the right to self-identification.
The Transgender Persons (Protection of Rights) Amendment Act 2026 requires a favorable recommendation from a government-appointed medical board for a district judge to certify an individual as a transgender person.
