It was one of those historical thrillers where even 163 turned into a tense, hard-fought chase. Gujarat Titans finally got over the line against Punjab Kings by four wickets at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on Sunday, May 3, but not before going deep into the final.
The result handed Punjab Kings their second defeat of the season and their second defeat, but Shreyas Iyer’s side will take a lot of heart from the fightback they put up after taking the contest to the brink.
Much to the Gujarat titans’ delight at the finish, questions will once again be asked about their middle order and their inability to shut the door on a chase that should have been sealed much earlier. Shubman Gill had the biggest smile at the end, but the Titans will know they made the chase a lot harder than they needed to be.
Punjab, meanwhile, may walk away frustrated but far from deflated. Defending a modest number on the surface that offered plenty for disciplined seamers, they constantly looked for a way back and nearly pulled off what would have been one of the steals of the season.
The Ahmedabad pitch, it turned out, was far from straightforward for the batsmen. It wasn’t unplayable, but it required method, patience and precise shot selection. It was not a surface for reckless stroke play and the batsmen who adjusted best looked best in control.
It was the seamers who dictated the conditions for most of the night on the track, where hard lengths and subtle changes of pace proved to be the most effective weapons. In contrast, spinners found little help, with minimal spin on offer and little room for error.
In the end, Gujarat got the points and Punjab were left with another defeat, but the tight margin told. It wasn’t a Titan-led chase, but they survived.
