Strange injury while celebrating! Jordan Henderson rushed to hospital after England win
England’s celebrations following their dramatic last-16 World Cup victory over Mexico took a painful turn when midfielder Jordan Henderson was taken to hospital with a serious wrist injury suffered moments after the final whistle.
The 36-year-old suffered the injury while celebrating with England supporters at the Azteca Stadium after the team’s exciting 3-2 win. Henderson is believed to have tripped over the billboards during a routine rendition of Oasis’ Wonderwall and landed awkwardly on his wrist. Television footage later showed him being dragged off the pitch.
England manager Thomas Tuchel confirmed after the match that Henderson had been taken to hospital and admitted the injury looked serious.
“He injured his wrist. He’s in hospital at the moment. It’s a pretty serious injury,” Tuchel said.
“It just doesn’t fit the evening that Jordan’s not with us right now. I don’t know the process that’s going on. I just finished my media duties and the doctor told me he’s in the hospital.”
Speaking to the BBC, Tuchel added: “Jordan just fell and hurt his wrist. It looks really bad.”
Defender Dan Burn said Henderson fell over one of the advertising boards as the England players made their way to the traveling fans after the match.
The incident cast a shadow over one of England’s most memorable World Cup victories in recent years. Thomas Tuchel’s side beat Mexico 3-2 in a pulsating match to book their place in the quarter-finals despite playing with 10 men for more than half an hour.
Jude Bellingham scored twice in quick succession to put England in control before Julian Quinones pulled one back for the visitors before half-time. Jarell Quansah was then sent off following a VAR review early in the second half, leaving England to withstand relentless Mexican pressure.
Harry Kane converted a penalty to restore England’s two-goal lead but Raul Jimenez scored from the spot at the other end to set up a thrilling finale. However, England held firm to seal a famous victory and set up a quarter-final showdown against Norway.
Henderson remained on the bench for the entire match but was shown a yellow card in the closing stages. He became the first England men’s player to appear in four FIFA World Cups when he came on as a substitute in the group stage win over Panama.
The experienced midfielder will remain in Mexico City with a member of England’s support staff while the rest of the squad return to their training base in Kansas City, Missouri.
England will already be without Quansah against Norway due to suspension, while Reece James remains sidelined with a hamstring injury. Henderson’s condition will now be closely monitored ahead of the quarter-finals.
