Jamie Overton is no longer the same bowler he was at the start of Indian Premier League 2026. Rewind just a few weeks to April and the contrast is stark. That’s when Tim David dismantled him in Bengaluru, hammering 30 runs and one huge hit disappeared over the roof of the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium.
CSK vs MI: MAIN | SCORECARD
It was a night when everything Overton tried seemed to fail. The more he tried to get David into a spasm to have space around the goal, the more the batter was batted and the ball repeatedly flew into the stands. Fast forward to Saturday, May 2, and the narrative has turned.
It was the same Overton who stood tall as a key figure An emphatic win for Chennai Super Kings over Mumbai Indians in the much awaited ‘El Clasico’ at the MA Chidambaram Stadium. Overton, who trusted high-pressure lethal overs, delivered with precision and composure. He gave nothing away to the likes of Hardik Pandya, Naman Dhir and Robin Minz, batsmen known for their ability to break bowling attacks.
With tight lines, clever variations and unwavering control, Overton conceded just a solitary boundary in his spell, ensuring MI finished well behind where they would have hoped.
HOW OVERTON BLEW THE LIFE OUT OF ME
Going into their final five overs, MI had every chance to capitalize and ensure they reach at least 180 if not more, especially with six wickets in hand. But all they managed was 39 runs. And it was the two overs played by Overton that made the difference.
Overton turned lethal moves into strangleholds and choked out MI just when they needed the momentum the most. If there was any lingering memory of David tearing him apart at Chinnaswamy, it was the perfect redemption. Overton turns his fortunes around after poor start to IPL 2026 (Courtesy: PTI)
His magic at the back end was a masterclass in variation and pace. He mixed sharp, short balls with clever cutters and never allowed the batsmen to line up. Naman Dhir’s wicket was crucial as he could have made the difference by about 10 runs if he stayed till the 20th over. The cutter at 123.8km/h gripped the surface, completely fooling Dhir and leading to a bad ride.
Pandya, known for his finishing skills, was kept on a leash with the enemy’s short bowling pinching him for space. Overton clocked over 145km/h and Pandya’s deliveries rose awkwardly, forcing ill-timed shots. Even as MI tried to turn the tide, the pressure never let up.
The penultimate over summed up Overton’s dominance. He gave up just four runs, executing his plans to perfection, changing pace, hitting tough lengths and denying any boundary opportunities.
OVERTON EVOLVES AND EVOLVES
Last month, Sunil Gavaskar had said that bowling would be CSK’s biggest pain point during IPL 2026, and he was right to an extent. His fears seemed justified as the Super Kings began their campaign with three losses on the trot. Overton in particular was not known for his death bowling and CSK had every reason to be worried.
But a month later, Overton delivers lightning bolts, so much so that one Tilak Varma even broke his bracelet. Overton, who has little to no experience of bowling at the death, now breathes fire at crunch time. He currently has an economy rate of 9.04, but if you take away his spell against RCB at Chinnaswamy, that figure drops to 8.30, highlighting how one bad outing can skew the totals.
Immediately after that tough spell against RCB, Overton bounced back in style to rock Delhi Capitals with impressive figures of 4-0-18-4. He followed that up with a three-wicket haul against Sunrisers Hyderabad, underlining his growing influence with the ball.
With the win over MI, CSK have well and truly revived their campaign and are now firmly in contention for a top four spot. As the tournament reaches a stage where every result becomes crucial, CSK will rely on Overton to continue to step up and take the load off their batsmen.
