Punjab Kings fast bowler Lockie Ferguson has come to the defense of his compatriot Kyle Jamieson after he was cautioned for his celebration towards 15-year-old Vaibhav Sooryavanshi. The fast bowler was found to have breached the Indian Premier League’s code of conduct after dismissing Sooryavanshi during Delhi Capitals’ match against Rajasthan Royals on Friday 1
The incident occurred in the second behind Jamieson off the very first ball, Sooryavanshi went to the boundary of the box. On the next delivery, Jamieson responded with a sharp yorker that beat the youngster and hit the stumps. Jamieson, clearly pumped after the dismissal, drove away in celebration, glaring at Sooryavanshi as he walked back, his intense gaze adding to the power of the early breakthrough.
“Yeah, Kyle’s a good mate of mine. He got pretty fired up which is quite understandable, it’s not easy to get wickets in this part of the world and that was big. So I think it’s part of the game.” Ferguson told India Today ahead of PBKS’s clash against Gujarat Titans on Sunday, May 3.
They awarded one demerit point and warned Jamieson against this celebration.

However, Ferguson refrained from commenting on whether the guidelines are stricter for pitchers than for other players in the field. However, he reiterated that showing emotion is what makes the game engaging for fans.
“I think the celebration, I think the fans like to see the passion, so I can’t comment on anything from the governing body’s point of view, but as a player I think the enthusiasm that comes out is great for the game. As a fan of the game, you want to see the players being fired up, the players showing emotion, how excited they are about the goal,” he added.
This comes after a debate broke out on social networks over whether the governing body was lenient with batsmen and fielders who displayed aggression on the field, pointing fingers in particular at animated former Royal Challengers Bengaluru captain Virat Kohli.
Ferguson also made it clear that it is important to draw a clear line between what is in the spirit of the game and what constitutes direct provocation.
“Obviously there are times when it might cross the line, but in the game of cricket it shows how much the players here love to play, love to compete,” he added. “And when they have success, you can see the emotion come out. He’s obviously a big guy, too, so when a big guy has a lot of emotion, it makes it look even bigger.”
BOWLING ARE YOU WORRIED?
While the Kings were carving their way to victories and tallying high chases, their bowling was below par with their executionsconceding 200 plus a total of five times and 195 once in seven completed innings.
“So we’re trying to execute, some days are not that good but at the same time the skill sets that are part of this bowling attack led by Arshdeep (Singh) and Yuzi (Chahal) were considered fantastic in the last game,” added Ferguson. “So we’re trying to make small adjustments, we’re trying to tighten up in areas. We know in the IPL how small margins can look a lot bigger on TV, but we’re just trying to tighten up in areas, we’re going to try to double down on our planning.”
The return of Lockie Ferguson is a big boost for the PBKS bowling department. He missed the opening part of the tournament to attend to family matters. PBKS next match against Gujarat Titans on Sunday 2nd May at Narendra Modi Stadium, Ahmedabad.
