Former SNDP leader Yogam Mahesan’s family meets Home Minister, seeks fresh probe into his death

The family of KK Mahesan, former union secretary of Kanichukulangar Sree Narayana Dharma Paripalana (SNDP) Yogam, met Home Minister Ramesh Chennithala at his residence in Haripad and sought a fresh probe into his suicide case on Sunday.

The family urged the minister to intensify legal action against the first accused, SNDP general secretary Yogam Vellappally Natesan, and to form a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to re-investigate the case. Mahesan’s wife Usha Devi, who lodged a formal complaint, told media that the minister patiently listened to their concerns despite his busy schedule and assured them that appropriate action would be taken.

She claimed that no further action was taken in the case and the existing investigation was not continued as it involved Mr. Natesan and his son Thushar Vellappally, who is an accused in the case.

Ms. Usha also accused Mr. Natesan and Mr. Vellappally of making defamatory remarks against her late husband to force the family to withdraw from the case. “But we cannot be deterred by such attempts. We will continue our fight until we get justice,” she said.

She had earlier lodged a formal complaint with Chief Minister VD Satheesan shortly after the United Democratic Front (UDF) government came to power. Mahesan was found hanged in the SNDP Yogam office at Kanichukulangara in Alappuzha in June 2020. He was also the state coordinator of the controversial SNDP Yogam microfinance scheme.
