
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert for Odisha and predicted hot and humid weather for Friday, May 1. Sikkim, Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, Nagaland, Mizoram, Tripura and parts of West Bengal are also on orange alert but due to heavy rains. An orange hail warning has been issued for Karnataka.
“Isolated hailstorm likely over South Interior Karnataka on May 01,” the IMD said in its latest press release. Two days ago, India’s IT hub Bengaluru witnessed an intense hail storm.
According to the meteorological agency, a fresh western disturbance is likely to affect the western Himalayan region from May 2. This suggests that northwest India can expect a gradual rise in maximum temperatures of 2-3°C till Saturday and a gradual fall of 3-5°C over the next 3 days.
“Gradual decrease in maximum temperatures by about 2°C over central India likely till May 1 and no significant change during May 2-6,” the IMD said.
Heat wave alert for Maharashtra
A heatwave is likely in parts of Maharashtra, especially Vidarbha on May 1, a day after Chandrapur recorded the highest maximum temperature of 44.6°C. West Rajasthan region can expect similar weather conditions for the next two days. Besides, Tamil Nadu and Puducherry are likely to witness hot and humid weather till May 4; in coastal Andhra Pradesh, Yanam and Rayalaseema till May 2.
Rain warning
The IMD has issued a weather warning warning of moderate to widespread rainfall along with thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds (40-60 kmph) with heavy to very heavy rainfall likely over sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim and northeast India during the week.
The IMD, in its latest weather report, has predicted, “Isolated heavy rainfall likely over Arunachal Pradesh and Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura” till May 6. Assam and Meghalaya can expect showers till May 4 with isolated very heavy rainfall likely over Arunachal Pradesh on May 1; Assam and Meghalaya on May 2 and 3; Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura by May 2.

For South Interior Karnataka, the IMD predicted, “Heavy rain/storm with hail and gusty winds of 40-50 kmph is likely at isolated places on May 1, 2026. IMD has canceled the orange rain warning for Bengaluru in rural and urban areas.

The Met Office has issued a yellow alert and predicted light to moderate rain and thundershowers for the districts of South Bengal. “Thunderstorm, lightning and gusty winds (speed reaching 40-50 kmph) are very likely to occur at one or two places over North and South 24 Parganas, East and West Midnapore and Jhargram districts of South Bengal.”

Residents of the capital can expect “partly cloudy skies” today with maximum and minimum temperatures ranging from 39°C to 41°C and 23°C to 25°C. “Minimum temperature will be near normal (-1.5°C to 1.5°C) at most places and maximum temperatures will be above normal (1.6°C to 3.0°C) at most places over Delhi,” the weather bulletin said.
