Over the past few seasons, Gujarat Titans have felt the void left by Hardik Pandya’s departure from the side. Ahead of the 2024 season, Hardik was traded to Mumbai Indians, leaving GT with a big gap to fill in all three departments.
When Holder was bought for Rs. 7 crore during the IPL 2026 auction, it was initially unclear what role he would play in the season. But since making his debut for the team in the reverse fixture against RCB earlier in the season, the West Indian all-rounder has been among the first names on the team sheet.
Holder’s influence with bat, ball and on the field was evident throughout Gujarat’s win over RCB in Ahmedabad on April 30. With the ball, Holder took two wickets for 29 runs in his four overs and was held to three catches. While the dismissal of Rajat Patidar was controversialcatches by Tim David and Krunal Pandya helped GT push RCB to the brink.
He remained calm under pressure with the bat despite a middle-order collapse for GT that saw them go from 92/2 to 111/5. He stitched together a 30-run stand with Rahul Tewatia to take GT closer to the finish line.
Solanki explained why Holder is a special addition to the team, bringing his skills and experience to the field.
“He’s a world-class all-rounder, isn’t he? He’s kind of proven in the past in international cricket and franchise cricket, how measured he is. And I think he’s only getting better,” said Vikram Solanki, GT’s director of cricket.
“We were very excited when he was part of the team. He had to wait until he got an opportunity. But since he got an opportunity in all the games he played, he contributed well. And today, in the field, he was brilliant. He was brilliant with the ball. He has fantastic skills with the bat, just in terms of his ability to hit with the bat, he needs to be quite smart when he plays cricket. And this partnership with Rahul Tewatia is just an example of that,” Solanki added.
‘THE HOLDER HAS ALL THE SKILLS YOU NEED’
With the advent of the impact player rule, the role of a true all-rounder in the IPL has diminished. But Holder once again proved what he brings to the table. Balance with bat and ball.
“I think when we were chasing Jason in the auction, we thought he would be able to play both roles, bat and ball. So that’s exactly what he’s offering us,” explained Solanki. “I think if you look at the last calendar year, and maybe a little bit longer, his numbers at five and six have been pretty outstanding.
Solanki said Holder has all the skills you need in an all-around reliever. Apart from being a team man, the GT director also said that Holder is always ready to talk to the team management and the younger players in the team.
“He’s got all the skills you’d need. He’s a physically strong guy, he’s got a lot of reach and leverage on the ball, so all the technical details are covered. He also brings that extra dimension now, that kind of sprinkle, sawdust, if you will, to be a really skilled fighter. And I think that’s what’s at play now,” we said ahead of us.
“He’s a great team guy. He also brings … You often get individuals who have a lot of experience that maybe they can’t communicate as well. It doesn’t come naturally to them. Jason will always be willing to have fun. He’s always willing to have conversations, whether it’s with the coaching group, to actually impart a little bit of influence in his experience as far as the young guys as well as the coaching group.” said Solanki.
Holder scored 86 runs and took three wickets in his three matches for GT as they progressed to the play-offs this season.
