Everything you need to know about International Labor Day
International Labor Day, also known as May Day, is a celebration of workers and the working classes. It is a day to recognize the contribution, hard work, perseverance and dedication of the working class who have shaped societies and economies around the world.
History and meaning of Labor Day
The origins of this day can be traced back to the end of the 19th century, to the height of the Industrial Revolution. On 21 April 1856, Australian workers in Melbourne staged a mass stoppage as they lobbied for an eight-hour day, according to the United Nations. This day commemorates the eight-hour day movement, which advocated eight hours for work, eight hours for recreation and eight hours for rest. This inspired Indian workers in Chennai to celebrate the first Labor Day on 1 May 1923, organized by the Labor Kisan Party of Hindustan.
May 1 is celebrated as a public holiday in several countries, including Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, the Czech Republic, France, Germany, Greece, Italy, South Africa, Tunisia, Tanzania, Zimbabwe, Russia and China.
International Labor Organization on the working environment
The International Labor Organization, which advocates for a healthy psychosocial work environment, states: “The psychosocial work environment is defined by how work is designed, organized and managed, and the organizational practices that shape day-to-day working conditions. Psychosocial factors – such as workload and working hours, role clarity, autonomy, support and fair and transparent processes – strongly influence how work is experienced and affect worker safety, health and performance.”
He further notes, “When psychosocial factors harm workers, they become hazards that, along with physical, chemical and biological types, must be addressed and managed to ensure a safe and healthy work environment.
International Labor Day theme
The theme of International Labor Day 2026 is “Ensuring a Healthy Psychosocial Work Environment”, which focuses on addressing the challenges of the modern workplace such as burnout, stress and mental health issues.
