In a tough IPL 2026 encounter at the Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai Indians (MI) fell short by six wickets against a rampaging Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH). The match lived up to its billing as a high-scoring thriller, with both teams trading blows in front of a packed home crowd. Hardik Pandya, who led MI after winning the toss and electing to bat first, watched his side post a massive 243/5 in 20 overs. But SRH chased down the target of 244 runs in just 18.4 overs to finish on 249/4 to register their fifth straight win.
What happened in MI vs SRH clash?
Ryan Rickelton played a brilliant 123 off 55 balls, interspersed with power shots. Hardik himself chipped in with a quick 31 off 15 but it wasn’t enough. SRH’s explosive opening partnership set the tone, with Travis Head 76 (30) and Abhishek Sharma 45 (24) getting off to an aggressive start. Heinrich Klaasen then unleashed a fiery 65 off 30 balls, while youngster Salil Arora sealed the deal with a quick 30 off 10, smashing Hardik for two sixes in the final over.
Hardik Pandya reflects on missed chances and bowling struggles
After the match, Hardik Pandya addressed the dew factor and the flying star of SRH. He said: “I don’t think the dew played a big part, just that they played some good shots, we threw some bad balls, got to the flyer. I think we pulled it off, but it wasn’t enough.”
It highlighted MI’s year-long pattern of near misses. “Yeah, I think it’s been that season before. When you get a few chances, you take them; that’s when the luck and the momentum changes. If you don’t, it hurts a little bit, but it’s still OK. All the guys really tried. They gave it their all, but it didn’t work out.”
Chants from fans sting as Hardik Pandya calls for more fun
Hardik Pandya touched the passionate Wankhede crowd. With MI struggling in the bottom half of the IPL 2026 points table with just two wins from eight games, the support has been tested.
“I think we didn’t give them much opportunity to support us. But yeah, they were pretty fantastic. They were loyal. They were fantastic,” Hardik said.
However, he also addressed the need to entertain the crowd more.
“Sometimes it hurts when the opposition team comes and they start chanting their names. We have to entertain them more to make sure we get that love and trust from them,” admitted the MI captain.
Crossroads of MI’s season amid SRH’s winning run
This loss leaves MI in a must win situation in the remaining league matches. Riding in high form, SRH have shown why they are the best candidate for a clinical chase under the lights.
