The Great Nicobar Island (GNI) project is “one of the biggest scams… the biggest theft of India’s wealth” being carried out to fulfill “one businessman’s fantasy” despite the damage it will cause to India’s ecology, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi said on Wednesday (April 29, 2026).
Mr. Gandhi, the leader of the opposition in the Lok Sabha, who was on the island on Tuesday, said in a video statement: “What is happening here is that all these trees are going to be cut down with complete indifference to the people who live here, with complete indifference to the damage it will cause to India’s ecology. So that one businessman, Mr. Adani, can fulfill his fantasies.”
