Paddy farmers in the district have expressed disappointment after the government failed to fulfill its assurance that the second crop would be procured through cooperative societies. The pilot initiative did not take off because no cooperative institutions signed up to buy paddy fields and make direct payments to farmers without a clear government guarantee.
“The government’s assurance that the purchase of paddy fields in Palakkad district would be done through cooperative societies has completely failed. The proposal for Kerala Bank to provide funds to cooperative societies for purchase did not materialize as the bank insisted on a proper government guarantee and clearing of outstanding dues,” said Desiya Karshaka Samajam (DKS) President Muthalamthodu Mani.
