The Sree Kanteerava Stadium looked straight out of a winter postcard on an otherwise hot April day. A sudden hailstorm in Bengaluru turned a football pitch white, with the visuals quickly going viral on social media, leaving fans to joke that the city had briefly turned into a European winter destination.
It was a bizarre sight for a city known for pleasant weather rather than extreme conditions. The clips showed the entire surface covered in layers of hail resembling snowfall, something usually associated with countries like Germany, not South India.

The timing was all the more surprising. Bengaluru has been dealing with rising temperatures for the past few weeks, making the sudden switch to hail all the more dramatic.
WHY IS KANTEERVA WHITE?
The transformation was caused an intense spell of rain accompanied by heavy hail across parts of the city.
Hail quickly accumulated on the surface, making the stadium look like snow. Viral videos showed how quickly the ground was changing, with parts of the pitch completely covered in white.
A similar impact was seen at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium where heavy rain lashed the area, showing how widespread the weather system was across the city.
HOW BAD IS THE WEATHER IN BENGALURU CURRENTLY?
The hailstorm comes amid a stretch of unseasonably warm weather in Bengaluru.
Temperatures in the city have recently climbed above seasonal averages, hovering around 36°C, which is higher than what is usually expected in April. The contrast between the heat and the sudden storms emphasizes the unstable weather.
Across Karnataka, conditions were even more extreme. Several regions in the north and central parts of the state saw temperatures in the mid-40s, with some areas exceeding 46C earlier this month.
For Bengaluru, the sudden hailstorm was a rare respite from the heat. But it also showed just how unpredictable the weather had become, with the city going from summer conditions to almost ‘snowy’ conditions in a matter of hours.
