Manchester United Eye New Centre-Back Signing
Manchester United have identified the need to strengthen their defence in the upcoming summer transfer window and have already begun preparations. The Red Devils are expected to part ways with both Victor Lindelöf and Jonny Evans after this season, creating a gap in their defensive lineup.
Despite already having players like Leny Yoro, Matthijs de Ligt, Lisandro Martinez, Harry Maguire, and Ayden Heaven on their books, Ruben Amorim believes the squad still requires further reinforcement in this area.
According to The Sun), Manchester United are prepared to spend £50 million to secure the services of Everton defender Jarrad Branthwaite. This isn’t the first time the club has shown interest in the England international; under former manager Erik ten Hag, they had failed twice to sign him. Now, they are ready to make another attempt.
The Red Devils are optimistic that Everton would accept their offer, allowing them to finally land their long-term target. Branthwaite is reportedly open to a move to Old Trafford, believing that joining Manchester United could elevate his career and profile as a player.
Potential Obstacles
However, there’s a potential hurdle in this deal: Manchester United’s failure to qualify for the Champions League next season. Branthwaite is keen to prove himself at the highest level and aims to compete in the Champions League, as he believes it would strengthen his case for a spot in the England squad for the 2026 World Cup.
For Amorim’s side to secure a place in the Champions League, they would need to win the Europa League, as their league position currently doesn’t offer a direct pathway.
Everton, on the other hand, are reluctant to sell their star defender but may have little choice due to financial constraints. The club’s struggles with Profit and Sustainability Rules could force them to consider selling Branthwaite, whose contract runs until 2027, to secure a significant transfer fee.
Other Targets
In addition to Branthwaite, Manchester United are also keeping an eye on Genoa defender Koni De Winter as they look to bolster their defensive options for the upcoming season.
With the transfer window approaching, it remains to be seen whether the Red Devils can successfully navigate these challenges and secure their desired reinforcements.
