Mumbai Indians are in a familiar spot. Halfway through the season and their campaign is on fire. But this is Mumbai after all. They won from there. They overcame the odds and either won the tournament or finished in the top four of the Indian Premier League.
But in recent years, since the management change saga, those fairy-tale moments have dwindled. In 2024, after Hardik Pandya’s return to the MI jersey, the team remained poor. There was no cohesion, the captain was booed and their season fell apart. It was better last year. After winning just one of their first five games, they went on a six-match run to finish in the top four.
But this season smacks of 2024. Jasprit Bumrah, wicketless in several matches, he openly showed his frustration on the pitch. Suryakumar Yadav hasn’t clicked in more games than him and skipper Hardik looked clueless when the team needed answers from him. With the bat, with the ball and in the field, Hardik failed when it mattered most.
So when they take on a resurgent SunRisers Hyderabad, it’s safe to say that confidence isn’t really oozing from the camp at the moment. IPL 2026 Points Table
Meanwhile, SunRisers Hyderabad, buoyed by the return of Pat Cummins, have been flying high in recent matches. They have won four games. Their last game against Rajasthan Royals was a high-tempo game, the kind of game the team needs to prepare for someone like Mumbai Indians.
Before the tournament, no one gave SRH’s bowling unit a chance, but Varun Aaron has worked on the Indian youngsters that SRH have scouted this season. They can blow hot and cold, but when push comes to shove, Praful Hinge and Sakib Hussain have delivered.
With Cummins back, he is expected to improve.
The SRH batting line-up also bears the responsibility. Ishan Kishan has been in incredible form and led the team through the middle matches. He found support in Heinrich Klaasen, who may not be at his best fluently, but he made sure to dive into the pressure and give SRH the best chance of a comeback in the death overs.
MI vs SRH: Team News
Mumbai is sweating availability of Rohit Sharma. The opener injured his hamstring against Royal Challengers Bengaluru on April 12 and has not played since. There has been no update on him yet.
MI has another injury concern. Their lead spinner Mitchell Santner was ruled out of the IPL due to a shoulder injury and was replaced by South African Keshav Maharaj. Maharaj is a veteran spinner but is unlikely to get a chance on Wednesday.
MI vs SRH: Bumrah, Boult in Focus
The match could be decided in the powerplay at the Wankhede Stadium. SRH’s top order didn’t look very fluent against pace and swing. In fact, they barely put bat to ball in the previous game against Jofro Archer.
MI’s best chance would be to start with Bumrah and Trent Boult in the powerplay and hope they completely establish themselves in SRH’s top order. Hardik does not inspire such confidence with the ball and should probably stay out of the attack in the power play.
MI vs SRH: Mumbai Pitch Report
The Mumbai wicket was an absolutely flat batting track. The lowest total this season at the Wankhede is 195 runs, a match which Mumbai lost in just 16.3 overs.
The pitch has seen scores between 220 and 240 runs this season and there’s no reason to believe it will be any different today.
The weather is expected to hover around 20 degrees Celsius.
