Mumbai Indians suffered a major blow after Mitchell Santner was ruled out of IPL 2026. The all-rounder injured his left shoulder during the match against Chennai Super Kings on April 24 at the Wankhede Stadium and failed to recover in time for the rest of the tournament.
The incident took place in the 17th over when Santner completed a catch to dismiss Kartika Sharma. He was immediately seen clutching his left shoulder and was later treated in the dugout, where an ice pack was applied and his arm was placed in a sling.
The substitution was approved during the second innings, p MI bring in Shardul Thakur as a concussion replacementa decision that also sparked considerable debate.
So far in the competition, MI are struggling in ninth place in the table with four points and a net rate of -0.736 after losing five of their seven games.
WHO DID MUMBAI NAME AS REPLACEMENT?
Mumbai Indians have signed South African left-arm spinner Keshav Maharaj as a replacement for Mitchell Santner. One of South Africa’s most experienced spinners across formats, Maharaj is known for his accuracy, control and ability to generate sustained pressure. He has been a regular in the Proteas set-up since his international debut in 2016.
Interestingly, Maharaj was named in South Africa’s squad for the 2021 T20 World Cup without playing a single T20I. He later made his captaincy debut against Sri Lanka and made an immediate impact by taking a wicket with his very first delivery in the format.
A proven leader at international and franchise level, Maharaj has taken 31 wickets in his last 30 T20 matches, with best figures of 3 for 15. He was also recently part of the support team for the South Africa women’s team that secured a 4-1 T20I series win over Harmanpreet Kaur’s India.
Mumbai Indians, who are in the bottom half of the table, will be looking to bounce back when they take on Sunrisers Hyderabad at the Wankhede Stadium on Wednesday, April 29.
