Azmatullah Omarzai, the all-rounder of Punjab, suffered a personal loss after his mother passed away. The news was confirmed by his Afghan teammates Mohammad Nabi and Karim Janat through social media posts as they expressed their condolences and support to Omarzai and his family.
The 26-year-old is currently with the Punjab Kings in IPL 2026, though he has yet to feature in a match this season. Messages of support have since poured in from the cricketing fraternity as Omarzai and his family go through this difficult time.
Karim Janat wrote: “We are saddened by the death of the mother of national player Azmatullah Omarzai. May Allah grant the deceased paradise and give patience to the family. We share with them these moments of great sorrow.”
Nabi wrote: “I am deeply saddened to hear that respected mother Nawab Khan Umarzai and our representative Azmatullah Omarzai have passed away. May Allah Almighty grant her soul the highest place in Jannah and bless the entire family with patience and strength.”
WILL OMARZAI BE AVAILABLE FOR RAJASTHAN CLASH?
Punjab Kings are scheduled to play their next match on Tuesday, April 28 against Rajasthan Royals at the Maharaja Yadavindra Singh International Cricket Stadium in Mullanpur. The franchise is yet to issue an official statement and it is not confirmed if Omarzai will be available for the match.
Omarzai has emerged as an emerging all-rounder for PBKS and is showing flashes of his potential with both bat and ball. He has played 16 matches in his IPL career so far, scoring 99 runs at an average of 12.37 and picking up 12 wickets at an economy rate of 9.68.
After featuring in seven matches for Gujarat Titans in his debut IPL season in 2024, Omarzai moved to Punjab Kings for Rs 2.40 crore. He played nine matches and took eight wickets in IPL 2025 after which PBKS retained him for the ongoing edition.
Punjab Kings have been in dominant form this season, sitting at the top of the table with six wins from seven matches, while their match against Kolkata Knight Riders at the Eden Gardens was called off due to rain.
