Laxman, six, and his group of school friends are part of a sea of children pouring out of the gates of a primary school in South Delhi’s residential area of Kidwai Nagar.
It’s noon and the group is walking back home, laughing and jostling in their bright blue school uniforms, cotton book bags slung across their bodies. The walk from school is the best part of their day, they say, as are the twice-fried potatoes — covered in bright red food coloring, sprinkled with sugar — bought from a roadside food cart. This is lunch for several school kids who flock to the cart for a plate.
