Leader of the Opposition (LoP) Rahul Gandhi on Sunday began his three-day visit to Andaman and Nicobar Islands for the Congress convention in Port Blair, after which the Congress leader is also scheduled to visit Great Nicobar Island (GNI), where the Union government is planning a ₹92,000 crore mega infrastructure project amid fears of tribal communities that they will be displaced and lose their forest rights there.
The Congress in-charge of Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Manickam Tagore, said on Sunday (April 26, 2026) that Mr Gandhi had assured people in Port Blair that he would “continue to fight for justice, development and rights of the people of Andaman and Nicobar in Delhi”. While noting that the LoP also intends to visit Great Nicobar, Mr. Tagore said they are “awaiting permission from the administration” for the trip.
