Tamil Nadu’s historically high voter turnout – 85.1% according to preliminary data from the Election Commission of India – appeared to be the result of a special intensive revision exercise in the state that led to a net elimination of 68 million voters. While the state also saw an increase in the absolute number of voters who participated, the interim gain of roughly 24.8 million voters appears to be lower than the gains seen in recent cycles — 31.1 million voters between 2016 and 2021 and 64.8 million voters between 2011 and 2016. Urban/rural segments and regions are tracked.
Of the 234 precincts, 220 saw an increase in voters, while 14 saw an absolute decrease. Sriperumbudur (64,000 plus), Madhavaram (57,000 plus), Sholinganallur (56,000 plus) saw the highest increases, while Madurai South (-7,200 odd), RK Nagar (~-6,300) and Thousand Lights (~-5,700) saw the highest declines.
