Delhi Capitals did themselves no favors when they lost their home match against Punjab Kings despite scoring 264 runs. DC were chased by Punjab as the Shreyas Iyer-led side recorded the highest run chase in Indian Premier League history on Saturday, April 25.
A game against a rampaging Punjab side was almost enough for the visitors when Shreyas Iyer miscued a simple shot from Vipraj Nigam in the 15th over. Punjab needed a little over 60 runs at the time and Iyer’s wicket could have seriously disrupted the team’s momentum going into the death overs.

However, standing at long break, Karun Nair produced one of the easiest catches in cricket to throw away the team’s chances of a win. The Punjab Kings skipper made Delhi pay as he dominated the total in just 18.5 overs.
A devastated Axar Patel spoke to the broadcaster after the match and blamed the loss on the fielder. Axar said Delhi kept repeating the same mistakes with dropped catches and there was no way the team could win matches if it continued.
“Yes, we are making the same mistakes again and again. I think when the wicket is so flat, if you can’t support your bowlers, we deserve to lose,” Axar Patel said after the match.
“At the same time, our bowling unit needs to look at themselves with the way they bowled in the power bowl. Our fast bowlers didn’t bowl well in the power bowl and added to that our fielding which cost us the match. I felt 264 was a really good score on that wicket,” he added.
KARUN-SHASHANK BHAI BHAI
Before Karun Nair fell, Shashank Singh of Punjab Kings dropped absolute keeper KL Rahul at mid-wicket. This was the fourth drop Shashank had taken in the last two games, prompting an angry Ricky Ponting to call off his fielder.
KL Rahul started paying DC and hit 152* off just 67 balls.
Fans joked that Karun Nair is the new Shashank Singh and she had a field day flooding social media with memes.
In the post-match press conference, Yuzvendra Chahal brushed off the dropped catch and said it was part of the game and these things happen.
With the loss, Delhi further cemented their position in the mid-table logjam where three teams are on 6 points each. Punjab on the other hand remained unbeaten with 6 wins from 7 games. The Shreyas Iyer-led team continues to dominate the league table with 13 points and a healthy net rate of +1.333.
