Former England captain Michael Vaughan sparked a debate on social media after he said in response to a post by Sam Billings that England batsman Joe Root is better to watch than Virat Kohli.
Billings, who currently plays in the Pakistan Super League, wrote on X’s question: “Is there anything better than watching Virat Kohli in full swing?” The comment referred to Kohli’s performance for Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) last night, where he helped his side chase down a massive 206-run target with balls to spare. Kohli remained unbeaten, bowled by Jason Holder after scoring 81 off 44 balls.
In response, Vaughan cheekily suggested that there was another batter who was more enjoyable to watch than Kohli, named Joe Root. “Yes, Joe Root,” he wrote on X, accompanied by a winking emoji. Vaughan starts social media war over Root and Kohli (Image from X)
The remark quickly sparked reactions online, with some users criticizing Vaughan while others agreed that Joe Root was more enjoyable to watch in red-ball cricket. One user even shared a picture of Root watching Kohli with the caption, “I agree! Watching Joe Root watching Virat Kohli in full swing.”
The debate comes at a time when Joe Root has further cemented his reputation as one of the modern greats, particularly in Test cricket, while Kohli, who has retired from T20Is and Tests, continues to demonstrate his class of cricket on a permissive basis.
MASTER CHASE AT IT AGAIN
Chasing a challenging 206 against Gujarat Titans on Friday, Kohli once again led from the front. It was a composed but aggressive knock that reflected his evolving approach in the latter stages of his career.
Kohli was eventually dismissed after chopping Holder’s ball onto his stumps. By then, however, RCB were in control, needing just 52 runs from 38 balls with seven wickets in hand.
He currently leads the Orange Cap order with 328 runs in seven innings at a strike rate of 163.18. The match was RCB’s last home match at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium, with their remaining home matches scheduled in Raipur from 10 May onwards, starting with the clash against Mumbai Indians.
