Royal Challengers Bengaluru Director of Cricket Mo Bobat has highlighted the team’s determination to maintain their aggressive brand of cricket ahead of their clash with Gujarat Titans in the Indian Premier League while praising captain Rajat Patidar for fully embracing the philosophy.
RCB have played with an ultra-aggressive mindset in the tournament so far, refusing to take their foot off the pedal despite losing wickets in bunches.
“I want us to play aggressive cricket. I want us to be brave – brave when those moments really call for courage. When the game is on the line or things get a bit tricky, if we are aggressive and brave at every stage, I think we will play the way we want to play,” Bobat said on the eve of the match against Gujarat Titans, as quoted by PTI.
Under Patidar’s leadership, RCB clinched their maiden IPL title last year and have started well this season as well, winning four of their six matches and finishing third in the table.
“We are planning aggressive tactics as our preference. But Rajat has to make his own decisions out there and he is very good at that. One of Rajat’s biggest strengths is that he is incredibly calm,” added Bobat.
Bobat believes Patidar has stuck to the team mindset while still making bold decisions on the field. “When it gets a bit chaotic, he’s pretty good at staying calm and sticking to the things he thought he wanted to do. With the bat, that means he’s pretty good at leading from the front. He’s always trying to take wickets in the field, which is great. That’s part of our identity and the way we want to play, and he fits that,” he continued.
NO CHECK ON CHINNASWAMY’S SETUP
The season saw Chinnaswamy’s pitch produce a mixture of calm and sticky surfaces, but Bobat did not attach much importance to this. However, he confirmed that the pitch no longer strictly lives up to its traditional batsman-friendly reputation after the two matches produced totals of 149 and 175 respectively.
“We have a BCCI curator here who is leading the pitch preparation, so simply put, we don’t have much influence on it. It’s a home venue in terms of the city and the stadium, but we don’t have any influence in terms of the surface,” he said. “I think in the last two and a half years that I’ve been involved, it’s been quite a different goal. We feel like we’ve got a decent understanding of it. It’s not always the same, but we feel like we understand it well enough. But for us, it doesn’t change the way we prepare for games.”
The match against Gujarat Titans will be the franchise’s last home game at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in the ongoing Indian Premier League season. They will play their last two home matches at the Nava Raipur International Cricket Stadium from May 10.
