AIADMK complains to Tamil Nadu Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar for “inaction” on his “horse-trading” petitions.
The AIADMK has complained to Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar that no action has been taken so far on its memorandum regarding alleged horse-trading by the ruling Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK).
On May 30, the party’s Agriculture Secretary and Assembly Whip ‘Agri’ SS Krishnamurthy and Rajya Sabha member M. Dhanapal submitted a memorandum to the Governor. After submitting another memorandum to Mr. Arlekar on Saturday evening, Mr. Krishnamurthy told reporters that his party’s memorandum, which was handed over to Assembly Speaker JCD Prabhakar, was not followed up. He added that he urged the governor to take immediate action on his party’s presentation of the issue.
IS Inbadurai, the party’s Member of Parliament (Rajya Sabha), who was also present at the time of the meeting with Mr. Arlekar, later told The Hindu that his party had sought an “independent inquiry” into the matter. Apart from the complaint filed by TVK at the Triplicane police station, MDMK general secretary Vaiko and Communist Party of India (Marxist) state secretary P. Shanmugam also spoke on the issue.
Mr. Inbadurai pointed out that his party had also brought the controversy to the Governor’s attention over the reported presence of two private individuals at Cabinet meetings. “It amounted to a breach” of the Official Secrets Act.
He recalled that one of the reasons for the dismissal of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) government in January 1991 was the controversy over confidential matters regarding the government’s measures to curb the activities of militants from Sri Lanka which had leaked. Mr. Inbadurai added that the party had verbally conveyed information to the governor about private individuals who allegedly had access to the first intelligence reports of the police.
