Kevin Pietersen fires back at Alastair Cook Former England cricketer Kevin Pietersen has launched a scathing rebuttal against Alastair Cook after the former England captain suggested young batsman Jacob Bethell should consider cutting short his IPL 2026 stint with Royal Challengers Bengaluru and return to county cricket.Cook argued that Bethell, despite his immense talent, was wasting valuable development time by sitting on the bench. The youngster, who lit up the 2026 Men’s World Cup T20 semi-final with a sensational 45-ball century, is yet to feature for RCB this season amid stiff competition from overseas stars like Phil Salt, Tim David, Romario Shepherd and Josh Hazlewood.

RCB’s big changes ahead of IPL: New rules, tribute and squad update Cook believes the situation is far from ideal for a player at this stage in his career. Speaking on the Stick to Cricket podcast, he said Bethell’s ability at the top of the order was already evident and needed to be backed up with consistent game time.“Because of that top-order batting, the way he played in Sydney, against that attack, in those conditions… I was looking at the players there and I’m sure the guy can open. If he can bat three, he can open,” Cook said.He also questioned the value of remaining on the IPL bench during a crucial development phase.“(But) it’s not ideal, is it? Bethell really shouldn’t be because he’s not opening. He’s sitting around the IPL doing nothing. Ideally he could come back and open for Warwickshire to help England,” he added. However, Pietersen strongly disagreed and turned to X to give a direct answer.“Alastair Cook has absolutely NO NEED for what it’s like to be in the IPL…What it’s like to always be among the best players in the world. So his opinion of Jacob Bethell doesn’t matter at all. Stay in India, Jacob. I know that even when you’re not playing, you’re learning and you’ll be a much better player,” Pietersen wrote on X.Pietersen emphasized that being part of the IPL environment, training alongside and learning from the world’s best players, can be invaluable to a young cricketer’s growth, even without immediate match opportunities.Kevin Pietersen further stirred the debate with another post claiming that county cricket is no longer of the same standard as it once was in the late 1990s and early 2000s.“If county cricket was as strong as it was in the late 1990s and early 2000s, I too would want Bethell playing it again now. But it’s NOT! England will benefit more by being in India, and he’s already shown that,” Pietersen wrote.
