The Andhra Pradesh government has announced the launch of an intensive cleanliness drive called Operation Clean Sweep across all 123 urban local bodies (ULBs) from May 23 to June 20. The move aims to improve sanitation in cities and strengthen solid waste management practices.
Department of Urban Administration and Urban Development Principal Secretary S. Suresh Kumar said on Thursday that the four-week trip aims to translate the growing public participation under the ‘Swarna Andhra-Swachh Andhra’ (SASA) program into visible improvement in cleanliness in urban areas.
Officials said the initiative seeks to institutionalize cleanliness as a daily civic responsibility while adopting a mission-mode approach to sanitation.
The campaign was structured into phases, each targeting specific sanitation objectives. During the first week, authorities will focus on removing black stains from garbage and improving the cleanliness of roads and public places.
The second week will prioritize desilting of storm water drains, nallas and cleaning of back routes to prevent water stagnation before the monsoon season.
In the third phase, emphasis will be placed on sorting waste at source and ensuring compliance among generators of bulk waste, including hotels, markets and institutions.
The last week will focus on cleaning public toilets and eliminating places threatened by garbage.
The Collectors will oversee the implementation of the raid in the districts, while the Municipal Commissioners will oversee the implementation at the city level through daily monitoring and geo tag reporting systems.
Mr. Suresh Kumar said the initiative represents a shift from routine sanitation work to a result-oriented mission to improve cleanliness and promote lasting behavioral change among citizens.
