The Premier League returns with three high-profile games as Arsenal host Newcastle United in a test of top-four ambitions, while relegation-threatened Wolverhampton Wanderers face a desperate Tottenham Hotspur side struggling for stability. Meanwhile, Manchester United take on Brentford with Champions League qualification in sight and the pressure mounting at both ends of the table.
ARSENAL vs NEWCASTLE
Both teams will be under pressure to deliver in this all-important clash in Arsenal’s title race. Newcastle United have endured a terrible season despite talented players and a good manager, but injuries have played a big part in their failure to climb the table.
Yoane Wissa was brought in to score goals but is unlikely to feature as he has only been available for 17 minutes in six games. Joelinton is suspended after receiving ten yellow cards, Emil Krafth and Fabian Schar are still out. Anthony Gordon and Tino Livramento could be available but Newcastle were unable to confirm their fitness status at the time of writing.
Arsenal are solid at the Emirates Stadiumwho have scored in 21 of their last 22 home games, while Newcastle have lost their last three games and have an abysmal away record this season.
Midfield will once again be crucial for possession, with Declan Rice and returning club captain Martin Odegaard likely to look to dominate the match from his offset. Tactically, Arsenal should control possession and play their 4-2-3-1 formation with high control and territorial dominance. Add to that Arsenal’s defense – Mosquera, William Saliba, Gabriel Magalhaes and Piero Hincapie – all combined under Mikel Arteta to form a very strong defensive unit.
Newcastle will be hoping to break on the counter and get the ball to Harvey Barnes and Anthony Elango through Jacob Ramsey and Lewis Miley, but inconsistency in executing plans could prove a hindrance. There is also the possibility of Bruno Guimaraes returning after spending time on the sidelines with a hamstring injury, and Newcastle will look to build around him if he plays.
WOLVES vs TOTTENHAM
Relegation derby? Wolverhampton Wanderers have already been relegated and Tottenham Hotspur could join them if they don’t start grinding out positive results.
Wolves have failed to get their act together this season, suffering heavy defeats recently, including an embarrassing 3-0 loss to Leeds United. Their attacking players were out, with Jean-Ricner Bellegarde, Angel Gomes and Adam Armstrong repeatedly disappointing coach Rob Edwards.
Their defense conceded too many goals in a 3-4-2-1 formation and their back line of Santiago Bueno, Toti Gomes and Ladislav Krejčí struggled week after week. The midfield should be stronger with four players – Jackson Tchatchoua, Andre, Joao Gomes and Hugo Bueno – to match Tottenham’s 4-3-3 formation, but they have few opportunities to create chances with a lone striker up front in Armstrong.
Bellegarde and Gomes will no doubt have their hands full to prevent Tottenham’s midfield of Conor Gallagher, Rodrigo Bentancur and Yves Bissouma from creating chances in the final with Xavi Simons, Dominic Solanke and Randal Kolo Muani.
On paper, Tottenham should have the stronger team and if they perform like they did against Brighton & Hove Albion, they should weather the storm and emerge victorious. Spurs supporters and Roberto De Zerbi can only hope.
MANCHESTER UNITED vs BRENTFORD
Manchester United is third in the tableand Michael Carrick has had a great spell as interim manager and is likely to be appointed permanent manager in the summer unless things go wrong.
On the other hand, Brentford have sold their best strikers, Bryan Mbeum to United, who will return against his former club in this match, and Yoane Wiss to Newcastle United. They previously sold Ivan Toney to the Saudi Pro League, but have again found a gem in Igor Thiago, who is second behind Erling Haaland in the goalscoring table this season.
Thiago added motivation in this match as United are struggling with defensive injuries.
Harry Maguire is injured, as is Matthijs de Ligt, while Lisandro Martinez was sent off against Leeds United for pulling Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s hair. That leaves United with Diogo Dalot, Noussair Mazraoui, Ayden Heaven and Luke Shaw to match Thiago. Carrick is lucky to have such a talented bench.
Brentford attacking midfielder Mikkel Damsgaard will be their playmaker, while Bruno Fernandes will fill the same role for United. Casemiro is likely to partner Kobbie Mainoo in midfield and United will miss the Brazilian after his departure in the summer as his leadership and goalscoring instincts have been vital. Mathias Jensen and Yehor Yarmoliuk will occupy similar roles at Brentford and will look to contain Fernandes as he delivers passes to striker Benjamin Seska if he starts. If Mbeumo, Fernandes and Matheus Cunha click, it could be a long and challenging afternoon for Brentford.
