The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has announced significant changes to the rules of the Indian Premier League (IPL) for the 2025 season. During a meeting with IPL team captains and managers at the Cricket Centre in Mumbai on March 20, the BCCI revealed that the ban on using saliva to polish the ball has been lifted. Additionally, a new rule has been introduced allowing the use of a second ball in the second innings of matches to counteract the effects of dew.

Second Ball Rule to Counteract Dew Factor
The BCCI introduced the second ball rule to address the challenges posed by dew, which significantly impacts nighttime matches. Starting from the 11th over of the second innings, teams will be allowed to use a new ball to ensure a fair contest between bat and ball. This rule aims to reduce the advantage teams chasing targets often gain due to the dew factor, which makes it difficult for bowlers to grip the ball. Umpires will assess the amount of dew on the field before deciding whether to implement the rule. This change is primarily intended for night games and will not apply to afternoon matches.
Removal of Saliva Ban Post-COVID-19
The ban on using saliva to shine the ball, implemented during the COVID-19 pandemic as a precautionary measure by the International Cricket Council (ICC), has been lifted. With the pandemic now under control, players can once again use saliva to maintain the ball’s condition, which is crucial for swing bowling. Many players, including Indian pacer Mohammed Shami, had advocated for the ban’s removal, emphasizing its importance for fast bowlers.
These changes aim to bring a new dimension to the IPL, ensuring more balanced and competitive matches while addressing key concerns related to fairness and playing conditions.
