The sun was relentless as early as 9 am on April 5 in Virudhunagar. Those who attended the election rally of Chief Minister MK Stalin, the star campaigner of the secular progressive alliance led by the DMK, were sweating profusely. Mr. Stalin delivered a precisely structured speech that was over in just 30 minutes.
In a clear departure from the past – when local leaders and candidates spoke before the party leader addressed the gathering – this time Mr Stalin spoke himself, only after a brief introduction by a local minister or district secretary. He highlighted the overall achievements Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) government and outlined the schemes introduced in the district before introducing the candidates.
